I would want my mate to be honest, to be faithful, i.e. believe in and practice fidelity, and to be spiritually connected. Of course, I would want him to be handsome too but I'm guessing your asking about personality and character traits. Can I get a fourth? Cause he would have to be humorous too.
I ditto what Mae said...honesty was the first thing that popped in to my head. I'd also say being faithful is also very important. Another thing I thought is that I would want my mate to be unselfish. Can I get 5 or 6? :))

Characteristics in a man? hmmmm... #1 Honest & Faithful, they go together! Unless they are honest that they aren't faithful! #2 Loyalaty is important, can't have no man having more loyalty's to another broad, or there will be issues to deal with. #3 Reliable sounds good. I was thinking 'hard worker' but someone can work hard as hell and never be reliable. I'm talking... keeping a job, being responsible and handling his bizzness.
NOW... GOOD LOOKS, A SENSE OF HUMOR AND THICK SKIN... ARE ALL PART OF A MAN BEING ABLE TO BE WITH US!! LOL YA HEARD!
